“There are times where we miss authentic french food and this is as good as it gets”
It’s strange that Singapore has limited numbers of French cafe. Instead, our island has exploded with Japanese and Korean food, but authentic French food, it’s really hard to find one that tasted decent and at a reasonable price.
I love french cuisine, unfortunately, Singapore french food disappoints me numerous times. Today, I’ll give this little Cafe Gavroche a try. This is the sister cafe of the main restaurant Brasserie Gavroche. Since Cafe Gavroche has a pocket friendlier prices, we thought let’s give this a try and if it’s good, we will head to the main restaurant.
The first dish we ordered is homemade pâté country style (S$14, top left picture). The pâté was served in a cute glass jar accompanied with fresh toast and pickles. I wouldn’t say this is my favourite but it’s considered good since it’s supposed to be country style. My personal preference is still the creamy savoury pâté we always find in typical French restaurant. This homemade version is a bit too dry for my liking.
Second on the menu, I ordered the special of the day which is roast duck leg with orange sauce. A very typical French dish and is always been a favourite of mine no matter how boring it seems. I believed this dish can’t really go wrong, and the taste is very standard. These isn’t any wow factor nor am I disappointed. Perhaps I wasn’t really expecting much for a classic dish like this.
As we were going for an early dinner after this meal, we decided to stop at this dish and end the meal with a cafe latte. Albeit how simple our orders are, the total bill still came up to be around S$60++. Oh well, it’s really hard to avoid a lesser bill in any cafe in Singapore. I will say that my overall experience in Cafe Gavroche is pleasant.
The staff provide attentive service and I do love the ambience although the food is mediocre. Will I come back again? I think I will if I’m in the area and feel like having some French food. At least this place is not pretentious and I can have a relaxing afternoon meal here. You can click here to view their full menu.
