"Feeling on top of the world, with jaw dropping view from the highest viewpoint in Reykjavik is luxury in the greatest form."
Our second day in Iceland starts in the most luxurious way with our accommodation in Tower Suites Reykjavik . It is also one of the (if not, the most) luxurious hotel in Iceland main city, Reykjavik. The hotel is set on the highest floor of the tallest building, with each suites featuring unobstructed floor to ceiling windows, offering the most gorgeous panoramic views of Reykjavik you could ever imagine.
We arrived around 5pm when it's already dark, and the roads already emptied with no one around, thus, we encounter a little trouble locating the hotel. We weren't expecting to be greeted with an office building when the GPS informed us that we have arrived. Luckily, we met a couple who were heading up to the hotel, and they helped to tap their keycard at the lift so that I can take the lift to the hotel lobby. I was surprised that this luxurious accommodation only occupies one level on the top floor, comprising of only six suites. It felt more like a service apartment hotel but with all the luxurious touches.
Mr Roberto greeted me at the front desk. He was expecting us. After meeting him, I then found out that we were supposed to give him a call before arrival so that he can personally escort us up. After settling the car which we can conveniently park for free at the building car park till 9am the next day, we were brought to our jaw dropping beautiful rooms. The door opens up to a floor to ceiling glass window with glittering night view of Reykjavik city. There's a spacious walk-in wardrobe and my top favourite part is the bathroom! The luxurious fixtures, (especially the pretty lights and mirror) with the big bathtub located next the window offering the perfect view of the city and the distance mountains. It's simply life's luxury to have a bath with such a view in this beautiful city.
Visiting Iceland during this time of the year in December means longer hours of darkness. The sun starts to rise only around 10am the next morning. This gives us ample to time set up bathroom for a nice shot of breakfast in the bedroom and then we continue a breakfast by the window shot. Our room faces the East, perfect for watching the sun slowly rise up behind Mt. Vífilsfell in the far distance and Mt. Úlfarsfell which sits a little nearer to the colourful houses in the foreground. Tower Suites does not have a restaurant, therefore, breakfast is served in the room. We were asked to choose our breakfast items the night before. Something interesting which is offer on the breakfast list is Cod oil. Cod oil has been a staple nutritional supplement in the Icelandic diet since the 1930s. Cod oil is high in Vitamin A, D & E and good source of Omega 3. It's served in a shot glass. I drink it in one go and it tasted very much similar to light oil with lemongrass scent. Surprisingly, it's not hard to drink at all. The rest of the of breakfast food are quite standard but of course tasty.
The entire idea of serving breakfast in the room is for the guest to relax and enjoy the amazing view of Iceland while eating breakfast in bed. We did perfectly that, but with a little work in between such as arranging it nicely for photos. By the time we managed to relax and enjoy the breakfast, it's already 11.30am and we need to check out of the room. We ended up relaxing in the main lounging are which is quite nice too. It feels like a huge living room. As guests, we are entitled to free flow mini bar and everything in the fridge and counter in the main lounge, except alcohol where they have a honesty note for you to write what you have consumed.
The sun has rose to almost mid sky when we got ready to leave this beautiful premises. We would have loved to stay one more night but we need to get onto the road to explore the rest of Iceland. We bid a sad farewell to all the friendly staff in the hotel. Although, we have stayed only one night, they already felt like friends. This is what I loved about boutique hotels where their intimate service is something that big hotel chains can never achieved. I love people, love talking to them, understanding about their life and culture, and the first or perhaps one of the best way is always chatting with the service crew in the hotel I'm staying. They will share stories and experiences anytime.
I totally recommend anyone who are looking for the little romantic time with your loved ones in the middle of Iceland main city, Reykjavik. Or to at least try a one night stay in Tower Suites Reykjavik . The view will impress even the most bored person. Tower Suites Reykjavik is kids and family friendly too. All the rooms can accommodate up to 4 persons, perfect for a family of 4. The price of the room includes free flow mini bar and breakfast, plus personalized service. Tower Suites belongs to the Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) group, which I have trusted their selection for years. I hope to be back in this hotel again next time I'm in Iceland. One night is definitely not enough.
